The enclosed poster was first presented at the U.S. Semantic Technologies Symposium 2018, a meeting of 120 members of the semantic community around the United States and Canada. This 2-day meeting represented a wide range of semantic viewpoints and activities, and is likely to recur in coming years.
The poster presents the 3 major (and freely available!) products of Stanford's Center for Biomedical Informatics Research, in the School of Medicine at Stanford University. Protégé and WebProtégé represent 15 years of development of a community-leading semantic capability, provided to build ontologies and advance the field of ontological science. The BioPortal web service, originally funded by NIH's National Center for Biomedical Ontologies, has collected over 600 community ontologies representing biomedical and many other scientific domains, and has been downloaded over 100 time to provide services in other environments. The CEDAR Workbench, from the Center for Expanded Data Annotation and Retrieval, is a relatively new product for end-to-end metadata management that's enabled by semantic resources—like those built by Protégé and made available to researchers by BioPortal.
These 3 tools together form a rich semantic capability, able to develop solutions to semantic and metadata challenges in biomedical and all other domains. All can be freely used at (or downloaded from) their respective web sites, and are available on their GitHub projects.
